This gem doesn't need a special occasion to shine. Sour cherry and slight white pepper can be gleaned from and appreciated in this uniquely dark and yet lighter wine. None of the prestige of Pinot Noir or the mass appeal of Cabernet Sauvignon but like an interesting cafe or obscure book Craveyon’s Barbera will delight you. Barbera complements a wide variety of foods including hard cheeses and rich risottos. Cravers report it as a perfect partner to an exotic dish of roasted dark meats spiced with the Moroccan Ras El Hanout.
Barbera is believed to have originated in the gently sloping hills of Monferrato, in central Piemonte Italy. "De bonis vitibus barbexinis" or Barbera, was referenced in a vineyard land lease agreement written back in 1246-1277 and found at the cathedral in the town of Casale Monferrato in Italy, though some speculate Barbera originated in the Lombardy region of Oltrepò Pavese where it is the third most widely planted vine in Italy to this day.
Here in the California Barbera is extremely rare with less than 1,000 cases being produced annually. Being so uncommon makes finding an exceptional version akin to the proverbial four-leaf clover. Additionally, the low tannin levels make it appeal to those with a preternatural aversion to tannins.
